In the same letter mention was made of grape-vine cuttings which I had sent out from Italy and of sugar-canes which I had procured from the Straits Settlements and elsewhere. It may be interesting to know that from the 9 grape vine cuttings which survived the voyage 300 plants have been propagated this year and that I have distributed to cultivators in the New Territory 13,000 sugar-canes grown in our nursery in Tong Kong from cuttings from the plants which were eagerly taken by the Chinese applicants although it seems that cuttings sent over to them last year were severely neglected and entirely lost. It is satisfactory to know that there seems now better hopes of improved kinds being appreciated. One of my foremen has reported that he has just seen the cane cuttings which are doing well. I do not anticipate great success from sugar.
